She was considered the last surviving major star from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema before her death.

In addition, Olivia was also the oldest and earliest surviving Academy Award winner.

De Havilland rose to prominence by appearing in feature films like Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). She later received an Oscar for the 1939 American romance film Gone with the Wind.

After the health of Lilian’s two daughters deteriorated, she decided to move back to England for better medical care.

However, they later sailed back to San Francisco, eventually settling in the village of Saratoga. In 1925, Olivia’s parents finalized their divorce.

Later, her mother married George Milan Fontaine. Her stepfather’s strict parenting style generated hostility in the mind of both sisters.

In 1933, Olivia made her theatre debut in Alice in Wonderland. She also acted in several school plays, such as The Merchant of Venice and Hansel and Gretel.

Olivia even left her house to play the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet in a school fund-raising production of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

In August 1946, Olivia married Marcus Goodrich, a U.S Navy veteran, author, and journalist. Olivia gave birth to his son Benjamin Goodrich in 1949.

Their marriage lasted for just seven years.

Benjamin graduated from the University of Texas and started working as a statistical analyst for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, California. At 19, he got diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

At 42, Benjamin died in Paris of heart disease.

In 1955, Olivia married Pierre Galante, an executive editor of Paris Match. She gave birth to his daughter Gisele Galante in 1956.

The two ended their relationship in 1962 and got divorced in 1979. Olivia’s daughter attended the Universite de Nanterre School of Law and started working as a journalist in the United States and France.

After the divorce, De Havilland started living in a three-story house near the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
